Storefront redesign with a custom swatch picker — Needles in the Hay

Problem

Needles in the Hay is a yarn and fibre shop, and yarn is bought by colour. A staple line like Istex Léttlopi comes in dozens of shades — but the previous storefront leaned on the stock theme’s variant dropdown, where a colour reads as “0059 Black.” That tells a knitter nothing. Choosing the right shade meant scrolling a long text menu and guessing, which is the opposite of how anyone actually picks yarn.

Solution

A full storefront redesign on Shopify’s Horizon theme, with a custom swatch picker as its centrepiece. The colour dropdown is replaced by a visual grid of yarn-ball swatches — each one showing the real shade — so customers choose a colour by seeing it, across the dozens of options a single yarn line carries. The picker is built within Horizon’s block system, so it stays native to the new theme rather than bolted on, and the surrounding redesign gives the whole catalogue the same clean, browse-first feel.

Result

Live at needlesinthehay.ca. The redesign turns a text menu into a tactile, browse-by-colour experience that matches how knitters actually shop — and brings the rest of the storefront along with it. Hard numbers (conversion, time-on-page, support questions about colour) are still being gathered; this entry will be updated once that data is in.
